Marriage still matters for long-term health and happiness for Women

Getting married is linked to significantly better health outcomes for women, write Dr. Brendan Case and Dr. Ying Chen, researchers at Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program in a recent study.

They found that married women had lower risk of cardiovascular disease, less depression and loneliness, were happier and more optimistic, and had a greater sense of purpose than unmarried women.

Although the study was not widely representative—it sampled 11,830 mostly white and relatively well-off unmarried female American nurses, some of whom got married between 1989 and 1993 and the rest of whom remained single—its authors argue that marriage is still a crucial constituent of a flourishing life for many women.
