Chronic LBP?- Maybe it’s a disc infection.
This topic is explored in a complex paper from The European Spine Journal that states that 40% of patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) may have anaerobic infections of the nucleus pulposus (a jelly-like substance that sits between your vertebrae and act as a shock absorber). These changes were noted in MRIs and were known but before this study, no relationship was made between what was seen and the issues on the MRI.

Although it is possible for mechanical factors to create the changes seen, a new theory is that a large percentage of these cases may be due to an infection of the spinal material. Tissue samples collected from the discs were positive for bacterial infections in 46% of the patients tested. The theory appears to be that when a disc herniates, however slightly, it may be possible for anaerobic bacteria to enter the disc and cause an infection. |
