Dr. Lane’s Thoughts LX

1) Another mass killing by an 18-year old with access to military-grade guns. Robb Elementary School in Texas (the land of the free access to guns and concealed carry permits).  What, are you surprised?  What is so surprising here?  Teenagers with emotional or anger-issue problems and access to guns = mass killings or suicide.

The shooting is the latest entry in the long history of gun violence in the United States. Before Tuesday May 24, 2022, there had been at least 39 shootings in K-12 schools, colleges and universities in 2022, resulting in at least 10 deaths and 51 injuries.  Read that back slowly – in just this year!

While proposals to overhaul gun laws – such a ban on assault-style weapons or high-capacity magazines – face steep odds at the federal level the gun lobby cannot win.  It must not win.

The Second Amendment must stop being a Republican plank.  They must start to understand that this is a bipartisan issue when people die when access to guns is so easy.

They must stand up to their own constituents and start the long process of taking guns out of the hands of pretty much everyone.  Republicans must be brave and do the right thing.  The second amendment was never envisioned to serve the purpose it is doing now of giving everyone the right to access an endless amount of weaponry.

2) As we get older we need to be concerned about protein synthesis and beef up muscle strength that tends to fade with age. Milk, whole and skim, doesn’t help protect or build muscle. By contrast, when participants’ daily walking habit was increased by 150%, that revved up protein synthesis in muscles and conveyed strength-building benefits.

So if you’re now getting (a measly) 2,500 steps most days, going up to around 6,200 daily will help fight age-related (and sedentary-related) loss of muscle. When that becomes your daily bottom line, boosting that another 150% will get you up over 9,000 steps. Plus, for max muscle-strength protection, do strength training two to three times weekly.
