Dr. Lane’s Thoughts LXIII

1) There is the constant threat of violence being brought to my attention by the news organizations; violence against liberals, or, generally, other Americans for what the potential attackers states are real issues.  But they are not real issues – they are just anything that these groups can claim are affronts to “America” (or at least their version) There is no single principle that unites these Americans in their violence against their fellow citizens. They will tell you that they are for “liberty” and “freedom,” but these are merely code words for personal grudges, racial and class resentments, and a generalized paranoia that dark forces are manipulating their lives. These are not people who are going to take up the flag of a state or of a deeper cause; they have already taken up the flag of a failed president, and their causes are a mélange of conspiracy theories, egged on by their “anything for entertainment and the eyes of consumers” approach of FOXNEWS, OAN, Alex Jones, and the other right-wing broadcasts.

When people are driven by fantasies of internal corruption, by resentment, by an internalized sense of inferiority, there is no redemption in anything – they will never be pleased or satisfied.

Trump made their lives interesting and their views important – even though he filled his cabinet and advisors with the very people his followers hated: the educated, the elite, and the well-connected. He has made his followers feel important. He has taken their itching frustrations about the unfairness of life and created a cause for them to believe in, and cast himself as the central hero who will make it all better for them. Trump, to his supporters, is the avenging angel who is going to lay waste to the “elites,” the learned and liberal do-gooders, the godless and the smug, the satisfied and the comfortable.

Since the raid at Trump’s home his followers have made excuses. These excuses have run from the benign (minimizing the allegations) to the ridiculous (suggesting this was an conspiracy run by the DOJ and orchestrated by the FBI). Some say more about the people making them than they do about Trump, like a kind of initiation test to prove loyalty in which the excuse makers reveal their own weakness to a higher being; proof of fealty.

Many of his followers were blue-collared people with good values of hard work while their ‘leader’ Trump and his family had never worked a day and in no way did they deserve the respect of working people.  Trump and his people in their lives and had servants!  Trump did not even have money from working hard – it was all inherited and maintained by cheating the tax system! Pompous, silly children with positions of importance in the office of a vain, strange, man-child raised rich and self-important.

Trump had followers like no other President.  They treated him as some kind of God or a religious figure; but why? David French, in an article he recently wrote, states what the Trump True Believer felt about not only Trump but his enemies the the lies that they tolerated to hold Trump to this role in their lives:

“The Trump presidency exposed the true evil of the left. They persecuted Trump more than any other president in history. First, there was the Russia hoax, then the impeachment hoax, then they shut down the economy and schools to destroy Trump; they shut down churches to destroy the Church. They burned cities. They hollowed out our police forces. They were tyrants. They forced us to wear masks that didn’t work and to take an experimental vaccine that has killed tens of thousands of vulnerable Americans.

They hated Trump because Trump was God’s anointed leader to save the nation, and it’s no surprise that the forces of hell came against him.

Even then, they knew they couldn’t beat him. So they changed election rules. Dead people voted. Thousands of “mules” stuffed the ballot boxes, and then they tried to stop Trump from investigating fraud. And if anyone’s to blame for January 6, it’s Nancy Pelosi for leaving the Capitol unguarded. They just let people walk in, and now they’re holding political prisoners in solitary confinement. Second impeachment was a joke, another hoax. But still they can’t keep Trump down. Joe Biden is senile. He can barely walk or talk. Trump is coming back, and they know it, so they’re attacking him again.

Why do I stand with Trump? Because God has appointed him for this moment. And the hatred of the Democrats is proof.”

These same pro-Trump family and friends now say that they believe that Trump broke the law—but that they don’t care. They see Trump and his crusade—their crusade against evil, the drama that gives their lives meaning—as more important than the law.  They cannot separate their ambitions and their fundamental economic and spiritual needs from the very damaged and immoral person they decided could help them achieve those goals!

When enough Americans decide that a cult of personality matters more than a commitment to democracy, we risk becoming a lawless autocracy

2) Does it surprise anyone that Trump had the attention span of a child while in office?  He had to be entertained by the people who did his briefings by photos and illustrations; documents had to have bullet points and no document could be longer than one page.  He still, rarely, understood what he was being told.

3) Easy predictions:

a) The United States will become hotter through the coming years and the South West will become uninhabitable.

b) Not only will the world become hotter, the supply of water in the South West US will become too low to support life.

c) The increased heat and low water supply will lead to unfathomable resentment and dangerous actions by people  in the South West US, such as water hoarding, gun violence, and class and race warfare.

d) People will flee the South West and move north to states with lower populations and better housing prices which will accompanied by the easing of work-from-home (WFH) policies by their employers.

e) The loss of water in rivers, ponds, and other water sources will uncover many clues to solve decades-old crimes and unexplained deaths.

f) Around the world many people will die of dehydration, malnutrition, and sun-related cancers and other heat-related maladies.

4) All those people who make claims that sound like this: “back when I was a kid we rode in cars without seatbelts, ate Twinkies 24/7, used our guns indiscriminately, ate red meat, ran into traffic for no apparent reason, instigated gang violence (and so on, each claim being progressively weirder than the preceding claim) and we turned out just fine”

No, you didn’t turn out just fine.  There is no “we” in this statement, there is just a “you”, as in “you turned out just fine”

All the other kids and young adults died from doing all those things that you are sure caused no harm; it was only you who survived to talk about it.

5)  Here’s something interesting: When they would ask men and women what they looked for in their long-term partners, both genders would say they wanted someone “with a good sense of humor.” It was only when researchers pressed their subjects on what they meant, specifically, by “sense of humor,” that the sex difference became clear. Women want men who will tell jokes; men want women who will laugh at theirs.
