1)  We have decided to make our chiropractic business easier for us by going ALL-CASH.  This was a harder decision than you may think.  Naturally, it will be easier to see fewer patients for more money but I have a deep sense that I am abandoning my patient with insurance who cannot pay me with cash and have every intention to use the insurance that was supplied by their employer.

I understand that and I am sorry that I cannot see you any more.  Blame your insurer.  You can blame me also that I was not willing to tolerate the lies and subterfuge that your insurer put me through every day but definitely you can blame them.  They deserve your anger.

Between the deductible that patient had to meet before their insurance worked for them and the lies and demands that insurance companies put me through I finally gave up.  How many times do I have to inform the same insurance company day after day that I have a license – 10 years of having to fax or mail a copy of my license to them?!  The way that they disallowed almost every chiropractic-centric code I would bill and then decrease the amount paid for even the codes they did pay.

Insurance companies love to say that they “follow MEDICARE guidelines”.  This is a great way to deny responsibility to providers.  For chiropractors it means that the insurance only pays for one service: the chiropractic adjustment and they pay around $35.00.  No other service is paid for but the other services are ‘expected’ but not paid for. They also tell me that the rest of the services “cannot be billed to the patient”.

What does it mean to “Medicare guidelines”?  Let’s change the argument a small amount to something like religion: all forms of christianity follow the New Testament which is the story and teachings of Jesus.  Which form of christianity is doing it the “right” way?  If they all follow the same guidelines then there must be a ‘right’ way?

Each insurer (there are about 6 major insurers) has their own interpretation and each plan (each insurer has many different plans) and each plan has their own version of following the interpreation of the insurer.  They do not inform the providers what they think is the right way to bill – you just bill and they tell you that you “made a mistake” but only give you a vague message such as “used wrong modifier” or “not authorized” without informing you how to fix the problem.  if you call them the operator informs you that “they cannot tell you how to bill”.  This is a way to not pay you.  It is a very effective way to meet this goal.

I am not a charity.  I have a business to run with rents, fees, employees, and expenses.  The insurance companies wanted to make me serve their patients for free but call me “in-network” or “out-of-network” but that pretty much were euphemisms for “unpaid house bitch”.

No more.  You can blame your insurance company that they lost a good provider.

2) I can only speak for myself but a pet can be the best thing for any heart.  You don’t need to be alone or in need of companionship to appreciate a dog or a cat.  I have owned every kind of pet but only have a dog and a fish right now [the fish I own by default.  My daughter’s father gave it to her but he became mine when she lost interst and now he lives in my office].  The dog is my 6-pound Shih Tzu, Leo #4 [Leo is the name we have named every dog since I was 12.  The name just works for us].

Leo has made my life kinder and happier and it has brought my wife and I closer as we raise him.  She is an amazing mommy to him and he runs to her and kisses her every chance he gets.  A dog is always a dog, no matter his size.  I always thought I could only own a big dog (55+ pounds) but Leo has proven to have his own charms in that he curls up in my lap and sleeps on top of the couch back.

When you compliment a dog their owner is proud 100% because they also think they have a wonderful dog.  You compliment a child and the parents immediately think of how IMPERFECT their child really is.

Honestly, a small dog can be fun to dress up (yes, Leo has 3 halters and 2 sweater as well as a coat with a hood).  Women love the little guy and even moreso when he is wearing his clothes.  I am glad that I am married but I can see how a dog that small wearing a swater can be a real attraction for women to talk to me.  Leo also kisses all the latin girls (he has a unique interest in this one group) and he is great with small kids.  He is fearless with other dogs and they want to play with him also so it all works out great.

One more thing, little dog = little poops.  It is easier.

3) I am tired of young people congratulating themselves on their failure to accomplish anything in life by equalizing it with the words, “but I haven’t commited any crimes, or gotten pregnant, or become a drug addict” as if the avoidance of serious problems with socioeconomic and personal consequences makes you a stellar human being.  It doesn’t.  You don’t get a pat on the head, a cookie, or my undying gratitude for your failure to make your life more complicated or diving headfirst into a hole of neverending problems.

Guess what?  I have also never had those same habits!  I am also not a drug addict, a criminal, nor have I gotten anyone pregnant.  And…I still owe you nothing.

In no way does your living a normal non-criminal life make me feel obligated to support you or assist you as you sit around your home or mine and wait to be served.  I am glad that you are taking your time while you figure out your next move or your idea of what needs to happen before you start to consider your next move.

You can start by getting off your ass and cleaning your surroundings.  I owe you nothing and neither does anyone else.

4) I think that we all wonder why we cannot lose weight when we begin and exercise program – it is very “underwhelming”. Scientists studying the issue agree that most of us compensate for the calories lost to exercise by eating more, moving less, or both. Our resting metabolic rates may also decline if we start to lose pounds. All of this shifts us back toward “positive energy balance”, which is otherwise known as weight gain.

We all do it – we take pride in our workout and then eat the kinds of foods that put the weight back on.  Food has gone from a neccesity to an enemy in our lives!  Not only do we need to eat less we need to eat for less hours of the day.  There are diets out there with names like the 10:8 diet or something like that where we can eat for 10 hours but must stay away from food for 8.  They are all the same idea: eat less foood and eat for less hours and (probably) we should make better food choices such as staying away from sugar and salt and the sources of them.  We all need to be better educated as to what we are eating and what is in it.

5) Despite very liberal thinking by some people that communism is a fair and egalitarian political system with checks and balances it is not.  There has never been a country that has attempted this system that has not quickly devolved to tyranny and fascism.  On a small-scale like an Israeli kibbutz it can work but that is only if it is voluntary and open to people coming and going within reason.

The biggest problem of these systems is the obvious: the people who are LEAST CAPABLE  gain the most from the system while the MOST CAPABLE gain the least from their efforts.  Immediately, the most capable feel used and underappreciated.  Their (natural) response is to find ways to gain more from their efforts or skills and that leads to either criminal outputs or deep resentment which can lead to anti-social behavior.

What has happened in the past in countries that have attempted these political systems (Russia and China) is that the country has to take a repressive approach to those who oppose the prevailing ‘equality’ of resources and skills, ‘re-educate’ the people who have the most to offer and are resentful of their status, or kill people who do not respond well to the state’s attempts to suppress them.

The most prevalent problem with communism is that it is not a pure system but a politicized police state that rewards its highest-ranking members with luxury for nothing more than loyalty and proper birth.

Democracy: the worst system in the world except when you compare it to every other system in the world.

I am very glad I was born in the United States.  Flawed but wonderful.
