Measure Your BMI and Get Serious About CVD

A study from the Netherlands takes the guesswork out of computing if you are in danger for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Researchers found that waist circumference and body-mass index (BMI) we equally accurate in predicting non-fatal and fatal CVD for both men and women.
If you are a women, your waist should be ideally under 31 ½ inches. If your waist is over 31 ½”, but less than 34 ½”, you are overweight. If your waist if over 34 ½” you are considered obese. For men, the healthy range for your waist is under 37”, with overweight between 37” and 40” and obese beginning over 40”. The reason this is an issue is that as your waist grows, so does you likelihood of CVD. Obese individuals are twice as likely to experience non-fatal CVD and four-times as likely to experience fatal CVD as those that are considered healthy.
While one has to wonder how waist circumference can be standardized for all individuals, regardless of height, etc., this is not an issue to be taken lightly. Do you believe that waist measurement can determine cardiovascular fitness?
