Nicotine While Pregnant Increases Colic

While it may help a person quit smoking, a nicotine patch still puts nicotine into the body. This is a reality that some expectant mothers forget.
A study of over 46,000 infants found that infants born to mothers who smoked during their pregnancy or used a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) had a greater risk of infantile colic.
Interestingly enough, infants of mothers who smoked were 30% more likely to experience colic. Infants of mothers who used a NRT experienced a 60% greater chance of infantile colic.
While this study confirms earlier research, it does not exhaust other potential adverse effects that smoking and nicotine could have on infants.
