Reducing Unnecessary Drugs

Elderly people are more likely to be exposed to multiple prescriptions due to the nature of current medical care. As additional prescriptions are added, seniors face an increased risk of drug toxicity, negative side effects and even death. One study examined the changes in prescriptions for elderly patients between admission and exit in four different hospital geriatric wards. Researchers found that many prescriptions were discontinued due to “no indication (37 % of cases), adverse effects (13.2 %), inappropriate medication (7.7 %), non-demonstrated effectiveness (5.9 %).”

If you or someone you know is taking multiple drugs, it makes sense to have them reviewed to insure that they are absolutely necessary. This will help avoid drug toxicity and potentially life-threatening side effects.
