Why Your Heart Rate is High (PULSE)

As you might suspect. your pulse (heart rate) goe to a high number of beats when you exercise and drops when you stop that activity.  This may take 20-30 minutes if you are not fit but much faster in the more athletic person.  Your heart rate will be especially low when you are lying in bed.

But does your heart rate feel elevated for other reasons?  Yes!  Here a few reasons:

1. Physical or emotional stress.  This comes from a jolt of adrenaline, which elevates your heartrate

2. Overactive Thyroid.  Too much thyroid hormone makes your heart beat faster than it should.

3. Anemia.  if you have anemia you don’t have enough read blood cells to carry oxygen so your heart may beat faster to compensate.

4. Medication side effects.  Drugs used to treat colds, asthma, anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder and high blood pressure can have this effect.

5. Addictive substances.  Caffeine, cigarettes, and high levels of alcohol may cause your heart  rate to rise.  Also, illegal drugs also have this effect both from the substance and the unknown extra things put into it.

6. Strenuous physical activity.  When you exert more effort than your body is prepared for your pulse increases to meet the higher demand.

Illness or Poor Health.  Illness, fatigue, poor sleep, and dehydration can all lead to increased heart rate.
