Women With PTSD May Trigger Type 2 Diabetes

Women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have nearly twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those without the disorder, new research suggests.

New results from the Nurses Health Study show that PTSD was associated with incident type 2 diabetes in a dose-response fashion.

“Our results provide the strongest evidence to date that there may be a causal relationship between PTSD symptoms and type 2 diabetes incidence,” the investigators, with coauthor Karestan C. Koenen, PhD, Columbia University’s Mailman School of Medicine, in New York City, write.

The study was published online January 7 in JAMA Psychiatry
