Four Paths to Health
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Don’t smoke. And if you do, quit. This has to have been the greatest joke on the world: cigarette companies started the interest in smoking by putting them in the rations of soldiers in WW 2. The young men came home with the habit and then the movie industry showed the images of movie stars smoking and then smoking = cool.
Next, the companies and their executives spent decades denying the connection between tobacco and cancer. Instead of going to jail, they became millionaires. If you smoked in the past or today, you have helped them and in exchange they have given you a habit you pay for with cancer, smelly clothes, and constant congestion, not to mention underweight babies (if you smoked while you were pregnant).
2. Stay active every day. In many studies, desk sitters who did 30 minutes of physical activity a day, or people whose jobs kept them active (and didn’t work out in their off hours), saw this reduced risk of stroke. Note the key words: “Every day!” – motion should be your gift to yourself.
How about using the time walking or working out for alone time (if you need it) or shared time with those you love (if your relationship needs it). Either way, you win!
3. Drink one or more alcoholic drinks a week (but less than 14). What’s a drink? A small glass of wine, a single shot of spirits or a half pint of beer. Fine to keep up this habit if you already do it, but don’t take it up just for your health.
One of the keys of why alcohol helps is that it is fermented and this assists your digestive process. You couple this with motion and you improve your body processes two-fold!
4. Eat nine or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day (the study found that five was effective; we say you shouldn’t stop there). The researchers didn’t just go on hearsay, asking participants to recall what they ate; they checked vitamin levels to be sure.
That’s beyond easy. It’s tasty, smart and makes you feel great. Change begins with you!
