Is your acne from an omega-3 deficiency?

Acne isn’t just a problem for teens — although 85% of teens and young adults contend with it. It affects adults, too, popping up for the first time after the age of 25. According to Yale Medicine, 25% of women and 12% of men in their 40s have acne.

You’ve probably heard that acne can be caused by hormone fluctuations, stress, or even a reaction to foods like dairy. However, a new study reveals another possible cause that makes sense to us — a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids. That’s because not getting enough omega-3s is associated with chronic inflammation that can wreak havoc in all parts of your body — including your skin.

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology enlisted 60 folks with mild to moderate acne and found that more than 98% of them were deficient in omega-3s. But when the participants took 600 milligrams of DHA and 300 milligrams of EPA daily for eight weeks, then 800 milligrams of DHA and 400 milligrams of EPA daily for eight more weeks, and adopted a Mediterranean diet, their skin lesions were reduced significantly. As for dietary changes: The participants reported that increasing their intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains was most beneficial; as was reducing saturated fats, dairy and alcohol.

Our advice: Enjoy walnuts, chia seeds, wild salmon and ocean trout — all loaded with omega-3s (sockeye salmon has 2,700 milligrams in 3 ounces!) and consider combo EPA/DHA supplements.
