More vaping hazards for teens — and adults

More than 2 million American kids use vaping products and despite the restrictions on flavorings and warnings about addiction to nicotine and the risk of inhaling particulates that cause inflammation, there’s no sign that they’re getting hip to the risks.

Well, here’s an alarming discovery about vaping dangers that you may have missed — and we want to make sure that parents and kids see this. A recent study published in Tobacco Control found that when kids vape for six to 19 days a month, their urine lead levels are 40% higher than occasional vapers’ levels. And sweet-flavored vapes up the urine levels of uranium — yes, radioactive uranium — significantly.

These heavy metals and the added inflammation they cause can lead to heart, kidney and brain damage and affect your child’s cognition and mental health. They are also associated with an increased risk of cancer, respiratory problems and heart disease.

If your child is vaping, you can offer information on the dangers and support to help them quit. Have them enroll in This is Quitting by texting DITCHVAPE to 88709. Parents can text QUIT to 847-278-9715 to sign up to receive text messages designed specifically for parents of vapers. Also, check out the iHerb.com blog “Quitting Time,” and ask your doctor about using certain supplements to help your young vaper quit.

An added tip: If you are vaping, Mom or Dad, you need to quit, too. Nicotine and heavy metals are bad for your heart and lungs — and up your risk of chronic conditions.
