Meditation May Help Your Weight Loss Efforts

Meditation may help jump start your metabolism, according to a new study. And the more often you do it, the better the boost.

Results from a recent study, conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Ma., reveal that participants (both novice and experts) who listened to a 20-minute guided meditation saw an increase in their metabolic functioning, when compared to baseline data.

If that isn’t motivating enough, researchers also found that the way the body responds to mediation helps suppress a particular protein that’s involved with inflammation, stress, and the regulation of insulin. Clearly, monks have been onto something for thousands of years. It’s time to catch up.

If the mere idea of meditating makes you uncomfortable or confused, it’s possible to get the same beneficial buzz through prayer and yoga as well, experts say. The idea is to find what works for you, and expect a little trial and error at first.

Use these five tips to find your Zen groove:

Just breathe
Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and focus on your breath for two minutes. Your mind may wander a bit in the beginning, and that’s OK. Just gently guide your thoughts back.

Count
Focus on your breath, as you inhale and exhale 41 times each. If you lose count, use a time goal of five minutes.

Follow the leader
New to the “New Age” world? Try using a guided meditation to break yourself in. You can find someone to lead you through a phone app or through a website.

Speak the truth
Sit quietly, calm your mind for a few breaths, and then repeat a positive mantra (a truth that is positive that you want to integrate into your thinking) that has meaning to you, such as “I feel healthy,” or, “I am calm.”

You don’t have to stick with one mantra; change them up as needed.
