Coffee can reduce your risk of heart and metabolic diseases

It’s increasingly common for folks ages 60 and older to have more than one cardiometabolic (CM) disease, such as diabetes plus kidney dysfunction and coronary heart disease. In fact, around 34 million folks contend with the complications of multiple CM diseases, which can dramatically reduce their quality of life and longevity.

Now, a new study reveals a very simple — and tasty — way you can reduce your risk of developing multiple cardiometabolic conditions: Consume a moderate amount of black coffee or caffeine daily — that’s three cups of coffee or 200-300 milligrams of caffeine.

The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that compared to folks who get 100 milligrams or less of caffeine daily, folks who drank three cups of joe a day cut their risk of CM by almost 50%. And getting caffeine every day, but not from coffee, reduced the risk by around 40%. That means if you have a cardiometabolic condition like Type 2 diabetes, drinking coffee may help you avoid adding another CM condition to your diagnosis. And if you haven’t been diagnosed with any CM condition, it may help you dodge them.

Two important tips: Always drink filtered coffee to reduce the risk of elevated LDL cholesterol and never add sweeteners or fatty, sugary milks to the cup.
