Is Your Heart Rate the Same as Measuring Your Pulse?

To answer this question I want to start by informing you that:

Heartrate is information about your HEART

Pulse is information about your ARTERIES

While heart rate and pulse rate are often the same, they are not identical.

Heart rate refers to the number of times the heart contracts per minute, measured internally through methods like an electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart rate monitors.

Pulse rate, on the other hand, is the number of times the arteries expand and contract per minute due to blood flow, which can be felt externally at sites like the wrist or neck.

In healthy individuals, the two values typically match because each heartbeat generates a palpable pulse wave.

However, they can differ in certain medical conditions, such as when the heart contracts but does not effectively pump blood, resulting in a pulse deficit where the pulse rate is lower than the heart rate. This discrepancy can indicate underlying cardiovascular issues, such as arrhythmias or poor cardiac output. Therefore, while both measurements provide insights into cardiovascular health, heart rate reflects heart function directly, and pulse rate reflects arterial response and circulation.
