Best Diet for Longevity? Try the NORDIC Diet
For decades, the Mediterranean diet has been considered the gold standard in longevity research, backed by consistent evidence linking it to better health and longer life. However, a large new study suggests an alternative pattern—the Nordic diet—may offer comparable benefits.
Researchers from Aarhus University, Karolinska Institutet, and the University of Copenhagen followed over 76,000 Swedish adults for nearly 20 years. They found that those who closely adhered to the 2023 Nordic Nutrition Recommendations had a 23% lower risk of death from any cause, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, even after adjusting for lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. Notably, no participant followed the diet perfectly, indicating that consistent improvement—not perfection—drives the benefit.
The Nordic diet emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, seeds, and low-fat dairy, while limiting red and processed meats, added sugars, and refined grains. Its strength lies in the combined effect of these foods: whole grains support metabolic health, legumes improve gut function and blood sugar control, and fish provides omega-3 fatty acids linked to heart health. Reducing processed meat and sugar further lowers risks tied to cancer and metabolic disease.
What sets the Nordic diet apart is its dual focus on health and sustainability. The guidelines were designed to reduce environmental impact—considering factors like emissions, land use, and water consumption—without compromising nutritional value. This integrated approach suggests that diets beneficial for human health can also support planetary health.
Overall, the findings reinforce a key principle: long-term consistency with a balanced, plant-forward diet—rather than strict adherence to any single ideal—is what most strongly predicts longevity.
