Adding Chiropractic Care to Medical Care
A recent study about adding chiropractic manipulative therapy to standard medical care for patients with acute low back pain: results of a pragmatic randomized comparative effectiveness study
a. The authors compared the results of standard medical care to standard medical care combined with chiropractic manipulative therapy in the treatment of patients suffering from acute low back pain.
b. The study subjects were men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 and were all active military.
c. Participants had suffered from low back pain for less than 4 weeks.
d. One group got standard medical care and the other group received standard medical care plus chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT).
e. The CMT plus standard medical care group saw a doctor of chiropractic for up to 2 visits per week for 4 weeks.
f. Chiropractic care consisted of HVLA manipulations in each case, and in addition, other care such as brief massage, ice or heat, exercise, advice and mobilization at the discretion of the attending doctor of chiropractic.
g. Outcomes were evaluated using numerical rating scales (pain) and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire and Back Pain Functional Scale (function),
h. The manipulation in conjunction with standard medical care produced a better decrease in pain and an improvement in physical functioning over standard medical care alone.
The results indicate that the addition of chiropractic care was shown to be beneficial when compared to standard medical treatment only.
