Adulting

1) no matter how much young people talk about how much they are in a hurry to be an adult I want to inform you it is not worth it. Stay young and safe for as long as possible.  Being an adult all the time is very harrowing!

First, you have to pay for everything. You are not on your parent’s auto insurance or using their utilities or living rent-free.  All those things have prices and you have to pay them.

If you can’t pay them you have more worries.

Second, Getting and keeping a job is your whole life. You have to learn to get along with other people or you will not fit in and then those people will find a way to get you fired.  Your boss will either ignore you or spend too much time with you and either premise is job suicide.  Thinking about those relationship will engulf you.

You think that you bring valuable skills to the workplace?  So does everyone else and they may be packaged nicer.  Every six months the universities release more people with your same skills and your competition gradually becomes younger and more skilled than you.

Third.  If I wasn’t clear enough, paying you bills are your whole life.  Failure to pay on time or any other financial irregularity will go on your credit score which will scar you for about seven years [a credit score is like your permanent report card concerning money issues].

Fourth, some things will be out of reach because of money. Even things you think you ‘deserve’ or ‘must have’ to move ahead will be unattainable.  You are limited by your actual income, which is dependent on your boss and workplace.

Fifth, No one will care what you think, say, or care about if you don’t have $$.  Women do not want to date a man who can’t pay his bills and men do not want a woman who can’t contribute to a household budget.  Your friends will be resentful if you can’t pay for things to do with them; at least your share.

Your ‘real friends’ will gradually move away from you or find better people to spend time with if you don’t earn enough.  Money usually equals more fun things to do.

CAVEAT: Unless your parents are paying for some or everything in your life.

In that case, you are not actually an adult, no matter how old you get. You are a child living off his parents, either slightly, or completely.

This essay is meaningless to you.

Enjoy that life you have until your 40s, 50s, 60s:

Congratulations! We all envy your delayed adulthood.
