CBD and Probiotics May Improve Gut Health
A review published in CNS & Neurological Disorders – Drug Targets suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) and probiotics may exert complementary effects on the gut–brain axis—the bidirectional communication network between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system.
Researchers from Amity University analyzed recent preclinical and clinical studies examining how CBD and probiotics influence gut microbiota, immune signaling, neurotransmitter activity, and neuroinflammation. They also explored interactions between the endocannabinoid system and microbiome-derived metabolites, which may play a role in regulating brain function and overall neurological health.
The findings indicate that both CBD and probiotics may enhance gut microbial diversity, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increase the production of neuroactive compounds such as serotonin and short-chain fatty acids. These effects could strengthen gut–brain communication—potentially via the vagus nerve—while modulating immune and inflammatory pathways linked to anxiety, depression, and neurodegenerative disorders.
Because of these overlapping mechanisms, the authors propose that combining CBD with probiotics may be more effective than using either alone, offering a potential new strategy for targeting neuroimmune and neurological conditions through the gut–brain axis.
However, the evidence remains preliminary. While animal and laboratory data are promising, human studies are still limited in size and duration. The researchers emphasize the need for larger clinical trials to determine optimal dosing, long-term safety, and overall therapeutic efficacy.
