Children’s Bone Health Improved by Activity

Encouraging your children to be at least moderately physically active can increase their bone mineral content. A new study measured the physical activity of 5-year-olds and found that those who were most active had increases in their bone mineral content of 4%-14% in their whole body, spine and hips when BMC was measured at ages 8 and 11. This association was particularly true for boys.
This is an important finding because low bone mineral content increases the risk of developing osteoporosis in adulthood.
