Concentra – a garbage organization
I know that this is a very provocative title for an article. It deserves to be.
To be clear, I have never been there and they are in the same business as me (doing CDL medical exams) but there is a clear difference between us: I do CDL medical exams to assist my patients; Concentra does it to make money from your employer and you are the loser because of their business model.
Let’s clarify what the problem with Concentra is: they work exclusively for your employer to ‘lower worker’s compensation costs’. Do they do this by keeping your workforce healthy? No! They ‘lower worker’s compensation costs’ by doing a medical exam (ostensibly by doing the CLD medical exam) and then INFORM THE EMPLOYER OF THEIR FINDINGS!
Concentra works for the employer, not the employee!
Is this a violation of HIPAA regulations? It would be if the patient paid for the exam but Concentra makes the employer pay for the exam and make the exam FREE to the employee. By creating this payment situation the employer is the payor and this is a legal loophole to be allowed access to what should be a private matter between the doctor and the patient. If there is any issue that the employer deems a future medical or health problem they fire the employee!

The examiners for the CDL medical exam: not Concentra doctors – they are hired per diem, meaning that they work just for the day and then go to another company the next day.
Because these examiners work just for the day, Concentra requires them to order ‘sleep apnea’ exams on any driver who has a 17-inch neck. This criteria is half correct. The truth is, it has to be a 17-inch neck AND another medical issue (a ‘co-morbidity’) of high blood pressure or diabetes.
If the patient doesn’t have these conditions then the neck is just a neck, as would be found in any large man, especially almost 100% of people who engage in sports, either amateur or professional! Big size = big neck. This is not a medical problem.
Also, if you have a problem with your exam you can never get in touch with the doctor or see your records because that doctor may never work at the Concentra office you went to another time. You can get copies of your records but no one can answer your questions because the staff at your location is not knowledgeable about the exam or, specifically, your exam.
Avoid these places!
