Death of a CEO

Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance arm was killed December 4, 2024 in the early morning in NYC while entering a building to attend a meeting for UnitedHealthcare. The killer certainly had a personal reason for killing Thompson based on words written on the shells: DENY, DEPOSE, and DEFEND.

No one writes words on the shells of bullets unless they are sending a message.

This assassination did not only bring shock to many but also glee from many others. UHC is the largest health insurer in the US and this means that it has had a role in denying payment for many people leading to unnecessary deaths or  continued pain and agony as their sought-after treatment was denied.

If this killer is found he will certainly be connected to a loss of a family member, mostly likely his wife or child.

Just so you know, UHC has an AI program that denies treatment based on an algorithm. ‘experienced particularly dramatic growth.’ The number of denied claims in 2022 was nine times higher compared to 2019, according to the report noted on FOX NEWS (a bastion of Right-wing propaganda). Democrats on the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) released a report claiming UnitedHealthcare’s prior authorization denial rate for post-acute care jumped from 10.9% in 2020 to 22.7% in 2022.

I do not doubt that Mr. Thompson was killed by someone affected by this denial of the payment for using approaches to prolong life for someone they loved.  The United States has the greatest healthcare system in the world, utilizing technologies and strategies that rank in #1in the world in the ability to preserve life while also using a payment system that can be simply stated as “the infirm and old people must die to save money.”  Money used to pay the salary of Mr. Thompson while his system separates him from the people he affects.

At the same time, the US healthcare system denies money to prevention and early interventions to slow down or stop people from becoming ill.

As a chiropractor who USED TO ACCEPT INSURANCE MONEY (but doesn’t anymore) I know that denial of payment puts me in the position of trying to get the money denied me by the insurer from my patients while they ignore my letters for the tiny amounts of money that I can charge as a DC.  it wasn’t worth it.

In the world of insurance it was a better use of money to spend $13,000 for a spinal surgery or $6000 for a pain management approach rather than $120 for a chiropractic session that would resolve the problem in less than an hour.

To the family of Brian Thompson – “Sorry / Not Sorry”.  Not every person feels that writing a blog column will take away the hurt of the death of their loved ones.

Don’t be surprised if once this guy is caught (and he will be) that the outpouring of sympathy is not to you and your loss; health insurance is a criminal enterprise dressed up with laws and regulations that favors the few while also rewarding the few (e.g. most people have to pay co-pays and deductibles for what little healthcare they receive while they pay the premiums and the people who work in the insurance industry make sure that shareholders get a maximum return on their investments).

Brian Thompson was rich because other people withered and died.  Trying to get insurance to pay for care denied is a maze inside of a conundrum that explains itself as a paradox.
