Dr. Lane’s Thoughts LXXXV

1) I went to Syracuse University for my undergraduate degree.  I recall that as a poor kid with a single parent I felt very vulnerable and uncomfortable (These are qualities that I am trying to remove from my daughter who I hope I have made confident and comfortable).

I did not feel that I could do things that were expressive and artistic out of fear of not getting the background necessary to find a means to support myself and stop being dependent on my mother.

2) This is a missive to parents who are trying to be supportive of their children at college who are afraid that they are indulging them too much at the same time wondering if this is us assisting or hampering their children’s growth as adults. I am talking about buying them a car or high-end electronics.

You are good parents. Really, you are doing your best.

The issue is not the car or the clothes or the gadgets. The real issue is what kind of child you raised. Did you instill in them sacrifice, hard word, delayed gratification?  Those are the only things that will get them through; the extras you pay for and provide only assist.

If you did your job as parents then your child will be fine. If you did not then it is not too late to give them these lessons which are the cornerstones of success as a student and an adult.

At times, your child is beyond your control and all of your best efforts cannot change their path. Sometimes, you must admit to yourself that your child is an independent being capable of making decisions; both good and bad.
