Early Signs of Alzheimer’s disease
Researchers from Birmingham City University in the U.K. have completed a two year study of brain scans on patients suffering from amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a common precursor of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Approximately 80 percent of patients with aMCI will eventually develop AD.
Brain scans of affected patients showed widespread loss of grey matter (reduced cortical thickness) on the left side. The main areas affected were the temporal lobe, superolateral parietal lobe, the parahippocampal gyrus, and some regions of the frontal cortex. in the left cortex, as well as high likelihood of hemisphere. Brain loss in these regions is linked to difficulties with “language, decision making, expressing personality, executing movement, planning complex cognitive behaviour and moderating social behaviour.”
The presence of atrophy or degeneration in these regions should immediately send up a red flag to the attending doctor. Such patients, especially those with signs of cognitive impairment, may well have a high likelihood of progression on to full blown AD.
