Einstein’s 7 Rules for Living

Rule #1: Expend your efforts on the things that matter.

I think we understand that there are some thing that are important to you that other people do not feel the same way about.  For some people dressing different everyday with an assortment of shirts, pants, shoes, socks and so on to create and inspire fashion is important; for others, this is a waste of time and they feel that their times should be concentrated on other matters.  These people may just have a few sets of clothes that go well together and wear only these clothes.

Rule #2: Do things you love, even if you’re terrible at them.

If you like to do some thing then just do it.  If someone else is better at it than you then accept that but don’t stop: you may improve or you may not but you will gain enjoyment.  The only thing that is important is you happiness doing it.

Soccer, playing an instrument, writing are all examples of things that people enjoy that we can be sure that other people will be better at.  Don’t stop doing anything because you are criticized by others because of your bad skills –  because you should be the only critic you listen to.

Simply, in the beginning, even the masters of sports and art and music were bad at the skill they have become best known for!

Rule #3: Have a puzzle mindset.

Think abut every situation as a puzzle to be solved.  Driving your car, meeting someone for the first time, finding a good gift – all situations that you can solve in more than one way.  Moreover, running a business or being in a job often use skills that  can be learned and improved upon by seeing them as a puzzle that your unique thinking can solve.

Rule #4: Think deeply, both long and hard, about things that truly fascinate you.

If you like to think about some subjects then do it because this is what fascinates you.  Being fascinated with a subject gives you purpose and nothing makes living more enjoyable than a purpose.

Rule #5: Don’t let politics fill you with either rage or despair.

This is something that is not unique to 2024 and the upcoming election.  Rage over politics is like anger at the day’s weather – soon it will be gone and you will have new topics to think about.  Sadly, your anger may be at a specific politician or party and these are your neighbors; the same people that you have much more in common with than differences.  No one you know is truly evil so taking time to understand their concerns even if you disagree with their approach may make your disagreements more tolerable.

Rule #6: Blind obedience to authority is the greatest enemy of the truth.

It is good to think for yourself about the problems of the day than to follow another person’s leadership without question. While we would all agree that Nazism and Fascism, as well as Soviet-form communism fall under this rubric, MAGA politics and cults are the same thing with a different  face – equally notorious and unacceptable.

Rule #7: Science, truth, and education are for everyone, not just the privileged few.

Einstein was talking about civil rights and sexism here but I think we all understand the value in opening all educational pursuits to all people.  The greatest minds today may be hidden in places both nearby and far away and all of them deserve a chance to shine.
