Exercise as Medicine

You Should Know: Should it now be considered malpractice not to prescribe exercise for depression? That’s the question psychiatrist-in-training Dr. Nicholas Fabiano recently raised in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. He points to an overwhelming body of research showing that both cardio and strength training can ease depressive symptoms and help lift mood.

Going Deeper: The evidence is robust. Between 30 per cent and 50 per cent of patients do not respond to traditional therapy to treat depression, but movement has been shown to boost mood and, for some people, can be as effective as medication. Yet exercise is still often treated as an afterthought. However, Fabiano argues it deserves a place alongside established treatments.

Takeaway: Fabiano advocates for a simple framework called “FITT”— frequency, intensity, time, and type — as a simple way to create a movement routine that works for you. That might mean committing to walking most days at a comfortable pace, then slowly adding minutes and intensity as it becomes a habit. The goal is to create a sustainable routine that you actually enjoy and can stick with.

Bottom Line: Exercise isn’t a cure-all, but the evidence is clear: regular activity strongly supports mental health. So next time you’re feeling blue, get out and there and move!
