Washington D.C. – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has released the July summary report of its Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse revealing nearly 5,000 violations.

On Monday, the FMCSA provided another update on its Clearinghouse indicating more than 30,000 drug and alcohol violations have been reported from more than 28,000 commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operators so far this year.

In July, the Agency said the Clearinghouse reported 4,796 drug and 97 alcohol violations, for a monthly total of 4,893.

Of July’s drug violations, 4,051 were positive tests, 646 were refusals, and 99 were reported as “actual knowledge of a drug violation.”

The Clearinghouse began in January of this year and July’s violations now bring the total year-to-date number up to 30,546.

The Agency says positive drug tests account for a total of 81% of the total reported violations.

Of the year-to-date violations, 15,902 have been pre-employment screenings, 10,568 were caught during random testing, and 1,379 were post-accident screenings.

The Agency said 26,433 drivers out of the 28,445 who have been placed out-of-duty so far are still in “prohibited status” as of the end of July.

Marijuana Tops The List of Positive Tests

As has been the trend, the most popular drug used by CMV drivers is marijuana, which represents 15,492 of the positive drug tests.

Cocaine metabolite (4,544), methamphetamine metabolite (2,979) and amphetamine (2,828) are the next most common violations.
