How Cocoa and Tea May Help Offset Long Hours of Sitting
Take A Seat: If sitting were a sport, many of us would be elite athletes. Young adults are now sedentary for roughly six hours a day, which is known to affect blood vessels and make them less flexible. However, a new study at the University of Birmingham suggests that consuming certain foods may help.
The Study: Researchers asked 40 healthy young men to sit for 2 hours and found that their blood vessel function decreased after the session. But when participants drank a cocoa beverage rich in flavanols beforehand, that same decline didn’t happen. The study suggests that consuming foods and drinks containing these compounds (think tea, berries, apples, and some cocoa products) may help support the vascular system during periods of inactivity. Interestingly, fitness levels did not change the effect.
The Takeaway: If you spend long stretches sitting during the day, adding a few flavanol-rich foods could give your arteries a little extra support. (This powder offers quite a lot. We’re also a fan of this tea.)
Keep in Mind: Consuming high-flavanol cocoa or tea won’t erase the long-term effects of too much sitting, so getting up as much as you can throughout the day, and even going for a walk if you can, is still important.
