How to think about dodging dementia

Last year, the Lancet Commission identified 40 factors related to developing dementia.  12 of these 40 ways that reduce the risk of dementia by up to 45%. (Better than nothing!) And this July, a study in JAMA confirms that even among folks at high risk for cognition problems and dementia, there are steps that effectively improve cognition.

So, what are the Lancet’s 12 self-care techniques to prevent dementia — and how can folks already at high risk improve their brain power?

The powerful 12 are:

  • treating high blood pressure,
  • reducing (or stopping, please) smoking,
  • correcting hearing loss with hearing aids,
  • overcoming obesity, becoming physically active,
  • stopping excessive alcohol intake,
  • avoiding or successfully managing diabetes,
  • getting help (from medication and/or therapy) for depression

Also noted are the benefits of avoiding social isolation, exposure to air pollution and traumatic brain injury and the importance of formal education.

And for folks with early signs of dementia, the best remedies are regular moderate- to high-intensity exercise, following the MIND diet, cognitive challenges (like playing speed of processing games or taking an art class), social engagement, and cardiovascular health monitoring (so developing problems can be addressed).
