It’s Not Too Late to Cut Back on Alcohol (Your Colon Will Thank You) |
| It’s Not Too Late: Colon cancer has been getting a lot of attention lately since it’s been rising in young adults for years. It’s also the second most common cause of cancer deaths overall in the U.S. So, understandably, researchers have been working to understand which lifestyle factors raise risk, and a new study about alcohol and colon cancer is offering new insight.
The Study: Researchers analyzed data from 88,092 U.S. adults for 14.5 years and tracked their lifetime drinking habits and colorectal cancer rates. Heavy drinkers (14 or more drinks per week) had a 91% higher risk compared to light drinkers (one drink or less per week). However, former drinkers showed no increased risk. In fact, their risk returned to the same level as light drinkers, suggesting that quitting or limiting alcohol can decrease risk of cancer. The Takeaway: It’s never too late to cut back. If you’re a heavy drinker, reducing your alcohol intake could meaningfully lower your colorectal cancer risk. Keep in Mind: Alcohol isn’t the only lifestyle factor that matters. Being overweight, having type 2 diabetes, smoking, and eating lots of red or processed meat all raise your risk, too. |
