Let’s End An Exercise Myth
The Myth: There’s no shortage of untruths in the fitness industry. One particularly old myth says that exercising “uses up” a finite sum of heartbeats, thereby draining your energy or “body battery.” We obviously know that exercise improves both the lifespan and the healthspan, yet the myth persists. Until now.
The Study: Research out of Australia posits that exercising actually saves heartbeats. In a study of about 150 people (109 athletes and 38 healthy non-athletes), scientists monitored heart rate over a 24-hour period. The athletes, on average, had a heart rate of 68 BPM, while the non-athletes had an average heart rate of 76 BPM. This equates to a “savings” of about 11,500 heartbeats in a day — or a 10% reduction in workload for your heart.
The Takeaway: It’s not exactly news that exercising helps you live longer — and live better for longer. But this new data helps quantify that fact in a different way, while also debunking a decades-old myth. Exercising does not drain your energy, but instead trains your body to manage it more efficiently.
Keep In Mind: Regular exercise is great for your health, but it is still a stressor on the body. It’s important to balance it with plenty of rest, recovery, and fuel.
