New Year for BETTER SUNSCREEN
We All Scream For Sunscreen: The U.S. has long lagged behind countries in Europe and Asia when it comes to advances in sunscreen and its quality — so much so, that many Americans are bringing sunscreen hauls back from trips abroad or buying them directly from foreign retail websites. But that could change, as the Food & Drug Administration weighs approving bemotrizinol for use in the U.S., a common ingredient in European and Asian sunscreens.
What People Are Saying: American sunscreens are often criticized, in part because the FDA hasn’t approved a new chemical sunscreen filter in more than 20 years. Bemotrizinol offers better UVA and UVB protection and it’s also photostable, meaning it won’t break down in sunlight (which is a pretty important characteristic for sunscreen). Another bonus? Very little of it is absorbed into the skin, which could quell concerns about chemicals seeping into the body — a common complaint of the anti-sunscreen movement.
What to Know: The FDA process is notoriously slow, and previous approval attempts have failed. The company pushing for bemotrizinol has been doing so for decades, but perhaps 2026 will be the year it breaks through.
