Not Much, Works for Low Back Pain. Still, Chiropractic gets a ‘thumbs up!
In a New York Times article titled ‘What Works for Low Back Pain? Not Much, a New Study Says’ the conclusion was that Acetaminophen. Acupuncture. Massage. Muscle relaxants. Cannabinoids. Opioids don’t do much good. The list of available treatments for low back pain goes on and on. But there’s not good evidence that these treatments actually reduce the pain, according to a new study that summarized the results of hundreds of randomized trials.
Five other treatments had good enough evidence to be considered effective at reducing chronic low back pain. These were exercise; spinal manipulation, like you might receive from a chiropractor; taping the lower back; antidepressants; and the application of a cream that creates a warming sensation. Even so, the benefit was small.
Now that you have read this I do want to point out that the limitations of chiropractic has less to do with the actual treatment and more to do with the case and the patient. Coming to the chiropractor soon after the onset of your back pain will lead to better results.
More than the case itself, the patient presenting to the office can be a big factor in how quick the results will show good results and how long the results will last. People in better shape with a fair to excellent lifestyle of choosing exercise and a non-inflammatory diet will lead to improvement and, possibly, the complete elimination of the source of the back pain.
People who expect chiropractic to reverse years of physical abuse and poor life choices will lead to less-complete recovery and the possible return of the back pain.
