Scientists Say the Brain’s Teen Years Might Last Until 32

You Should Know: Think back to something cringey you did as a teen or even a little older. Those memories can feel like evidence for the common belief that the brain isn’t fully developed until about age 25. However, a new study in Nature Communications suggests we may have an even larger window to excuse some of the decisions we chalk up to, ahem, the folly of youth

Going Deeper: A team at the University of Cambridge analyzed thousands of brain scans and discovered four major phases in how the brain’s wiring reorganizes itself with age. The first phase kicks in around age 9 as neural connections become more efficient. A second major shift happens around 32 and lasts until 66, when the brain moves into early aging. The final phase begins around 83, when the brain leans more heavily on specific regions to function.

Takeaway: Brain development is not a clean line ending in your mid-twenties. Instead, it’s a long, evolving process that continues over the course of a lifetime.

Bottom Line: Lifestyle and genetics still matter for brain health. But, just like the rest of the body, your brain will keep aging and changing no matter what.
