Small Activity Changes, Big Health Gains

A Dab’ll Do Ya: We all know exercise is good for us, but hitting the gym for an hour may feel impossible when life is already exhausting enough. New research published in The Lancet, however, shows the bar for making a real difference might be way lower than you think.

The Study: Researchers analyzed data from over 135,000 adults in the US, UK, Norway, and Sweden who wore activity trackers to monitor minor adjustments to their daily routines. They determined that adding just five minutes of moderate activity (such as brisk walking or gardening) per day could prevent 10% of premature deaths across the population. For the least active folks, that same increase could prevent 6% of deaths. Cutting sedentary time by 30 minutes daily was also associated with preventing 7% of all deaths.

The Takeaway: Five extra minutes of movement each day can make a real difference. Even small swaps like taking the stairs or walking during phone calls add up.

Keep in Mind: These are population-level estimates based on observational data, not personal guarantees. But the message is clear: when it comes to activity, something really is better than nothing.
