That Gluten Sensitivity Might Not Be What You Think
You Should Know: When it comes to demonized nutrients, gluten takes the cake. About 10% of the population worldwide has a gluten sensitivity, with symptoms ranging from bloating to brain fog. But new research published in The Lancet indicates these symptoms may actually be caused by FODMAPs or poor brain-gut communication, not gluten.
Going Deeper: When people who show gut symptoms after eating foods containing gluten, but test negative for celiac disease, they’re said to have non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). What researchers for this study wanted to understand was whether gluten was the real issue for those with NCGS, or if other factors were the real culprit.
What They Found: A multinational research team conducted a meta-analysis of 58 studies on NCGS. Their findings suggest most people are actually reacting to FODMAPs or a gut-brain interaction more like irritable bowel syndrome, not to gluten. In blinded trials, many people’s symptoms disappeared even when they ate gluten. A very small number of people had a genuine reaction to gluten.
Bottom Line: High-FODMAP foods include dairy, wheat, beans, and certain fruits and vegetables. So, yes, wheat might be a problem, but it could be because of the FODMAP carbs, not the gluten protein.
