One of my problems with people getting therapy is that the purpose is only to make the patient feel better about themselves without taking into account that these same people have an impact on the world around them, often to a cruel of malicious intent.
Just because you are ‘troubled’ doesn’t also mean that people in your life are tired of tolerating your bad behavior, shitty attitude, or wasteful attitude.
I am glad that you re unburdening yourself and learning how to feel better about yourself and learning to deal better with the world you are part of but, let’s face it, it is one-sided and rarely does the therapist make the patient see their behavior and lack of appreciation as the destructive forces that they are. Oftentimes these same behaviors lead to the response that the patient is seeking therapy about.
I think we all understand that a person seeks therapy because they feel misunderstood, unappreciated, angry, or lost. The job of the therapist is to rebuild the patient into a better and more resilient person who can handle the world better and feel more comfortable as themselves in the world that they inhabit.
In some ways I only wish that the same therapist would investigate the world that the patient creates. This ‘misunderstood, unappreciated, and angry” world that the patient is struggling against may be due to the influence of rudeness, selfishness, and stupidity that the patient themself creates. In other words, the patient is the problem that will never be solved.
It will never be that the therapist will investigate the world that the patient is struggling with – not only is this impossible but also not a good business construct because the worst patients will deny any culpability in their own unhappiness. Therapist need repeat business and not a person who will quit to find a softer, less demanding set of ears to tell their woes to, pat their bottom with praise and powder, and send them on their way with a false sense of their perfection and a resilience to understanding their own role in the world.
