Trump and Putin Are Lying About Ukraine

– No part of Ukraine wants to be part of Russia.  ‘Conceding’ Land to Russia will not appease Putin.

Putin has claimed from his first invasion of Ukraine (Vladimir Putin’s first invasion of Ukraine began in February 2014, when covert Russian forces entered and seized control of Crimea) that Ukraine wants to be part of Russia and that he was only invading it to help the Ukrainian people.

No credible evidence shows widespread desire in Ukraine to join Russia; public opinion polls consistently indicate strong Ukrainian support for independence and opposition to Russian control. Claims of unity stem largely from Russian propaganda and Putin’s historical narratives, which portray Ukraine as an artificial state. While isolated pro-Russian sentiments exist in annexed areas like Crimea or Donbas due to historical ties and coercion, these do not represent broader Ukrainian will.

Ukrainian Public Opinion

Nationwide surveys in Ukraine, such as those from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, reveal over 80-90% opposition to territorial concessions to Russia as of 2025, with even higher rejection of unification. Support for EU and NATO integration exceeds 70%, reflecting a national identity distinct from Russia. In occupied territories, reported pro-Russian views often result from suppression of dissent rather than genuine preference.

Russian Perspective

Putin has repeatedly claimed Russians and Ukrainians are “one people,” invoking Kievan Rus history to justify expansionism, as in his 2021 essay and 2025 statements. Russian domestic polls show high Putin approval (around 80%) tied to the war, fueled by state media portraying Ukraine as needing “liberation.” This narrative drives policy but lacks reciprocal Ukrainian support.

Evidence from Annexed Regions

In Crimea (annexed 2014), a 2014 referendum under Russian military presence claimed 97% approval, but independent pre-invasion polls showed only 20-40% favoring union. Donbas “referendums” in 2022 similarly lacked legitimacy, with most residents displaced or coerced; recent data indicates minimal voluntary alignment outside propaganda zones. No free, verified polls post-2022 confirm majority pro-Russian sentiment anywhere in Ukraine.

Trump, in supporting Putin, shows a weak character and a willingness to believe lies told by a world leader who has a history of lies and deception (much like himself).
