What is Diagnostic Lane? A way to save money on Laboratory Testing in Newark, NJ!
I own a unique business called Diagnostic Lane which fills a niche in healthcare in the Newark, NJ area.
We must start with the premise that you do not have health insurance. In the United States this is very possible with the high cost of insurance premiums and the failure of the federal government to create subsidies to off-set the high prices that many people cannot afford health insurance which can run $1,500 a month or more!
If you do manage to find a doctor who will charge you a reasonable cash price to see him for he might want to order medical exams of your blood. This is normal, it assists him in finding any health conditions you may need help with.
This is a problem! With no insurance you cannot afford to pay for the bloodwork. Really!
Let’s be clear about what I am talking about. Your doctor draws your blood into those little tubes and he sends it off to a laboratory for analysis (LabCorp or Quest, for example). Let say that the lab work costs $400 but when the blood is sent to the insurance company it is billed as $2000!
Why?
The insurance company will reimburse the laboratory $1000 from the $2000 billed. About 50% of the billed amount. As far as the blood laboratory is concerned, they just made a $600 profit.
If there is no insurance company to bill that bill ends up on you. Not the $400.00 (the real cost) but the $2000.00 that was billed to the insurance.
Naturally, you ask me, but there is a cash price, right?
No, there is no ‘cash price’.
There is only one price that the blood laboratory can charge and that is the insurance price of $2000 that you now have to pay. Any other price list (like a cash price), by law in the United States, would have be price charged to the insurance company; there cannot be 2 prices for the same procedure.
You owe $2000.00! You cannot discuss how you don’t have insurance and cannot pay $2000. The best the laboratory company will do is let you pay the $2000.00 over time or use a credit card but they will get paid that $2000.
Except at DIAGNOSTIC LANE. If your doctor send you to my office with orders for bloodwork that costs $400, that is pretty much what I will charge you. I add $50 to pay for my on-site phlebotomist but that is it – just the cost of the tests plus the $50.00.
When you bring us the lab tests you need we tell you the price so you can decide what you want to do. We have the prices for most common tests but we need to get the price for anything we don’t see too often. You can even call us to find out the total price before you come in.
There is nothing sinister or fraudulent here – we just do the work for less to save the people who use my office money. We do it because we can and we want to serve the community.
