Women Live Longer Than Men (and Scientists Now Know Why)
Not a Secret: It’s pretty well-known that women live longer than men in nearly every country. This doesn’t just apply to humans, but to hundreds of species existing in vastly different environments around the world. Among humans, it’s often attributed jokingly (or…not) to men being more reckless and women more calculated (and well…just look at this). But what really gives? Science says it starts at the cellular level.
The Study: Researcher Johanna Stärk and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology studied chromosomal sex differences in nearly 1,200 species in zoos around the globe. In 72% of species, females lived longer than males. Based on this and other findings, the scientists hypothesize that homogametic chromosomes — like two X chromosomes — are protective.
The Takeaway: The lifespan gap between men and women appears to be about much more than lifestyle habits. The protective effect of those double X chromosomes may actually slow aging on a molecular level.
Keep In Mind: While biology gives women a head start, lifestyle still matters. Factors like nutrition, exercise, stress, and social connection all play major roles in determining how long we live. For both men and women, longevity ultimately comes down to a mix of genetics, environment, and daily choices.
