You have a Slow Metabolism? Why aren’t you dead?
I hear far too often that the reason that people who are overweight or obese state is the cause is that they have a “slow metabolism.” There is only one kind of really slow metabolism: death. Everyone else has a “slowed metabolism” – slowed because they don’t bother to improve their health – and that is easily remedied.
Our friends at wikipedia say this about metabolism: Metabolism is the set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. These enzyme-catalyzed reactions allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments.
If you breathe, eat, evacuate and urinate (fancy medical terms for pooping and peeing), have a body temperature, move, sweat, and so on you have a NORMAL metabolism. If those things aren’t working normally, you would be dead.
Using your NORMAL metabolism to explain excessive weight is being self-deceptive. There is no such thing as a “slow metabolism” if you are alive. There are people who move slowly and are largely sedentary thereby making no demands on their bodies to raise their temperature, sweat, or lose weight but that does not make them a new version of human – the “slow metabolites” – that just makes them slow normal people.
I don’t even know who is reading this so I have no intention of being individually cruel or mean and have no means to do that so take this advice as a non-judgmental statement.
Because you have a NORMAL metabolism, if you move more and eat less fattening foods you will lose weight. The more you move and the less fat you put in your body, the more weight you will lose.
If you move more, increase your amount of motion to the point of raising your body temperature, and sweat, make your heart beat faster, and all the other examples of actions related to exercise you will…
… lose weight. Your normal body will be unable to keep the weight on you. Your body with its NORMAL metabolism will have to shed the pounds.
Along with your slimmer body you will shed the increased chance that the overweight have toward diabetes, cancer, joint pain, fatty liver, kidney disease, stone formation in both the kidneys and gall bladder, GERD, cellulite, and poor self-image.
Please do us all a favor, ok? You know all of your fat friends that you kept around you to commiserate about how cruel the world is to the fat and overweight – please don’t abandon them now that you are heading toward being slim and fit.
They need friends like you. They need examples like you.
