Your Best Anti-Smog Snack? Fruit.

Fruit Filter: Want to breathe easier? Start in the produce aisle. New research has found eating more fruit may reduce some of the damage of air pollution on women’s lungs.

The Study: Analyzing data from about 200,000 people in the UK, researchers compared their intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains to their lung function and their exposure to one form of air pollution: fine particulate matter. For every increase in exposure to fine particulate matter of 5 micrograms per cubic feet of air, lung function decreased by 78.1ml in people who didn’t eat much fruit (up to two servings per day). But in women who ate four or more servings of fruit per day, that reduction was 57.5ml.

The Takeaway: Fruit is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory plant compounds, which may mitigate oxidative stress to the lungs. Generally, women tend to eat more fruit than men, which is why the protective benefits were found only in women.

Keep in Mind: Devouring a fruit basket won’t shield your lungs from air pollution. Preventing exposure altogether is the best bet, but air pollution is unavoidable for many people, depending on their location, work, and socioeconomic status. Eating more fruit could be one way to diminish the damage.
