Knee Pain? Try Dextrose Prolotherapy for Knee Osteoarthritis
First, let’s get our words right here: osteoarthritis (OA) is not the inflammatory genetic-based arthritis but the more common “wear and tear” type of arthritis that most of us are prone to from years of manual work. It is a common, debilitating chronic disease.
Prolotherapy is an injection therapy for chronic musculoskeletal pain.
As a chiropractor I have treated many cases of knee pain due to osteoarthritis. I succeed in many cases but I have to consider other interventions when my best work isn’t enough. This study explored using prolotherapy for knee pain resolution when the cause was the loss of the meniscus and the patient was suffering from “bone-on-bone” OA.
In a recent study using two groups of OA suffers randomly placed into two groups, one a control group and the other one had prolotherapy injected into their knee.
Prolotherapy resulted in clinically meaningful sustained improvement of pain, function, and stiffness scores for knee osteoarthritis compared with blinded saline injections and at-home exercises.
