5 Myths About Chiropractors DE-mystified

Opinions on chiropractors seem to run very hot or cold. Those who I’ve spoken with either have a chiropractor that has positively changed their life, or they are skeptical based on their own chiropractic experience or the experience of someone they know.
I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Dr. Tushar Rawalji (Dr. T) from Advanced Wellness about some of the myths of chiropractic care.
Myth 1: Chiropractic isn’t scientific.
Dr. T: “It’s a fact that your nervous system controls everything. Hence, we have medical specialists who look at how the nervous system works and consider that scientific. If we apply knowledge of the human frame and movement, and look to the cause of the problem, then today’s chiropractic is quite scientific.”
Myth 2: Chiropractors are just “wanna-be” MDs.
Dr. T: “The vast majority of people think of a doctor as someone who writes a prescription and performs surgery. A medical doctor (MD) and a chiropractor (DC) are two professions that require a degree from a government accredited medical school or chiropractic college and are licensed to practice.
“Beyond this similarity, each profession looks at health and healing through different lenses. Medical doctors see the following: study of disease, study the blood, rely on drugs and treat symptoms. Chiropractors look at the following: see the whole person, improve the function of the nervous system, detect and reduce the cause of nerve interference and promote function.
“These two forms of care both have a place. MDs focus on crisis care. Chiropractors focus on health and healing.”
Myth 3: Once I go to a chiropractor, they will set me up on a program where I have to go for life.
Dr. T: “This is a big reason why people neglect the role of chiropractic in their life. The truth is, you don’t have to do anything. Some patients choose care for a brief period of time and some make it a point to incorporate chiropractic as part of their health-care team for their family.”
“Why so many visits then? Breakdown in the body can occur from a new trauma or a long-standing trauma where the person can’t handle it anymore. The role of chiropractic is to identify the problem and use each visit to build on the one before. Remember, change takes time and so does retraining the muscles and ligaments that support your spine.”
Myth 4: A chiropractor will want me to come in for treatment even when I don’t have a problem.
Dr. T: “This is the reason why Americans suffer from chronic illnesses and why America is not even in the top 10 healthiest countries on the planet. If we asked a race-car driver whether he would perform a tune-up on his race car before or after a race, the obvious answer would be before. This is to ensure his car is running at its optimal potential. Why then do we wait for our bodies to breakdown when we can perform tune-ups every day to ensure the longevity of our bodies? Chiropractors are trained to help you reach your full potential every day.”
Myth 5: I need a referral to see a chiropractor and my MD won’t approve it.
Dr. T: “The mutual goal of MDs and DCs is patient outcome and satisfaction. There is a strong push to ensure that patients cannot only seek care they need but also expedite the time to be seen. You don’t need permission from anyone to see a chiropractor. Medical insurance plans offer chiropractic benefits that depend on the plan you choose. Be careful not to allow your health insurance to dictate the quality of your life. It’s your body, your health and your future.
A growing number of families look forward to working with their chiropractor to help them make better lifestyle choices. This cannot be overstated by the fact that the majority, if not all, professional athletic teams in America have a chiropractor on staff for their athletes. The safety record for chiropractic continues to grow because it’s non-invasive and works with the design of your body.
