Advil Linked to Kidney Cancer

Advil Linked to Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer (also known as renal cell cancer or RCC) is a serious form of cancer that impacts the lining of the kidney. A recent study found that “longer duration of use of nonaspirin NSAIDs may increase the risk of RCC.” NSAIDs are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, etc.), and naproxen (Aleve, Midol Extended Relief, etc.).
In addition to kidney cancer, NSAIDs have been shown to increase the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, atrial fibrillation, cardiovascular death, spontaneous abortion in women, erectile dysfunction and hearing loss in men. This list is likely to grow as more research is conducted.
The lesson here is that no drug is without side effects, regardless of whether it is sold over-the-counter. Typical drug side effects include serious health threats and sometimes death.
