Beta-amyloid, Ischemia Team Up to Impair Cognition

Most patients with subcortical vascular mild cognitive impairment (svMCI) [a mild form of cognitive impairment) do not have substantial beta-amyloid (Aβ) burden (a sticky material found in the brain that has been linked with dementia), and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) does not increase Aβ burden.

But together, Aβ burden and CVD act synergistically to impair cognitive function in patients with svMCI. (Together the beta-amyloid plus the mild vascular issues work together to create a greater loss in cognition)

According to investigators, these findings “highlight the need for accurate biomarkers, including neuroimaging tools, for early diagnosis and the need to relate these biomarkers to cognitive measurements for effective use in the clinical setting.”

The study was published online February 19 in JAMA Psychiatry.
