Dr. Lane tells it all: the truth about doctors and healthMom got it right.

Hi readers,

I am very grateful that you read my postings – many taken from excellent sources of information about health and caring for yourself.  I don’t write as many posting as I re-post other people’s work because I have no need to re-invent the wheel.

As the title of this posting says, I intend to break the code of keeping healthy.  Simply, Mom got it right.

  What did Mom tell you?

1) Get some sleep

2) No, you can’t eat that fast food or junk food!

3) Go outside and play

4) Eat your vegetables

5) Don’t smoke

OK, all of you were waiting for a revelation from me, but that is it.  Maybe it is a lot more in many articles, but I can tell you from my desk here at 290 Ferry Street in Newark that is it – really!.

Before you think I am wasting your reading time, let me set you straight: I read constantly about  issues in medicine and healthcare.  I have been in college getting my degrees longer than most people go to school in their entire life (my chiropractic college gave me a degree that is as close to a Ph.D. as you can get for defending my thesis, on top of my DC).   I read about 20 professional articles a day.

All of the research I have read says professionally through long-term research studies involving thousands of test subjects and millions of dollars the 5 things I have stated above.

1) People deprived of sleep do poorly in their daily tasks, strain their minds, and cause stress in their bodies.  Nothing good can come of not getting enough rest.

2) Do I really need to tell you about how the huge amounts of fat, salt, sugar that is found in typical junk food and fast food will kill you before your time with diabetes, obesity, and clogged arteries?

3) Play, exercise, the greens of nature and the blue of the sky, the quiet of solace and the beautiful things you do for your body when you exercise: nature’s path to a long and happy, healthy and healthful life.  Do it with a friend, wife, or your children and you create lifelong bonds.

Compete in a sport and learn the lessons of perseverance, teamwork, strategy, and camaraderie, and body appreciation (I am talking about your body but the other meaning is ok, too).

Please warm up (dynamic stretching we call it) before you play, your body will appreciate the effort to avoid sprains and strains.

4) Vegetables and fruit are the medicine we all can use more of.  Food is better than supplements.  Science does not really know all the issues around why the whole food is better than the parts (vitamins, fiber, minerals, unknown elements found within the food source) but leave that to future discoveries.  All you need to know is that we need the real deal when it comes to food – consider the produce section of the supermarket to be your medicine chest and don’t cheat yourself with small portions!

5) Another topic that I don’t need to belabor.  Smoking is 100% bad for you,  Don’t start, stop if you have started.  If you love anyone, don’t expose them to your habit.

I have a background in Anthropology and shunning is something I learned about is found in various cultures for various reasons, some having to do with stupid reasons (women and menses), some having to do with group cohesion (those who break religious rules) and some having to do with rites of passage (Native American tribes would force a man out until he came back from his vision quest or African tribes that forced out young boys until the older men had circumcised them).

I feel so strongly about the horrors of smoking that it is the only thing I think would be acceptable  to shun people for.  People can leave from being around me until they lose this stupid and expensive habit.

You smoke and don’t like how I feel about smoking? Feel free to shun me (I appreciate not being exposed to your smoke so if you do this to me, THANKS!).

Lastly – us doctors just apply what Mom taught you and we put our knowledge to getting your body back to doing what it should do without any more intervention from us.  If you think I am being too simplistic, read the list of 5 things again and imagine a doctor telling you the same things with bigger words and longer explanations.

Your body is designed to work without medicines, braces, crutches, walkers, and even chiropractic adjustments.

Every intervention by a doctor should be short-term (e.g. for a specific period of time but not forever) so that you can return to the good health you were born with.
