Dr. Lane’s Thoughts LXI

1) To put how old the earth is and how recent Man’s rise to dominance you should reflect on the fossils of dinosaurs.  These fossils were ancient when human and our ancestors were young.  Humans and their precursors have been around perhaps 5 million years, most dinosaurs have been extinct 60 million years!

2) What does it take for Americans of any party to realize that Trump was only out for himself and his own enrichment?  There is no voter fraud of any kind.  The guy has had 7 bankruptcies, 3 divorces, a shaky connection to any moral ideals, and has had 2 impeachments.  In what ways does he constitute any kind of ideal or act as a good representative of this country?

Just yesterday (June 7, 2022) I went to vote and I was told I had voted by mail a few weeks ago.  A mild mistake but one that was easily caught by the system – the same system that works for us all.  I am nobody special and my early vote was quickly noted; as it would be for the 150M people who vote in national elections.

Because of Trump MILLIONS have been spent on paying his Republican operatives to ‘root out voter fraud” which has just been an enormous largesse to his own people to do NOTHING because NOTHING needs to be done.  He might as well pay them millions to figure out that water is wet (“Yep, it is still wet Mr. Trump.  Will this check still be good when I cash it in an hour?  I only ask because it is written from a GOP account with your name on it”).

At one time the Republican Party had real people who actually had something meaningful to add to the national dialogue on issues: fiscal responsibility, immigration issues, conservative values, and so on.  Those days are done and have been gone for over 10 years.

Now, it is gun nuts, abortion foes, crazies, election conspiracists, and Trump’s family (or, all of the above if you need a title for them).  It is filibuster-positive, slow government followers and people trying to hurt the American ideals.  They uniformly gain from the Democrats’ progress but deny that they share any of the same forward-thinking agendas.  Their agenda seems to be just slowing or stopping Democratic reforms from occurring but offering none of their own.

Does this surprise anyone?  People like Trump, Bannon, Stephen Miller, MTG all exist in a world that has to follow rules, attempt order, demand evidence and proof and all the other details that create the underpinnings of a democratic society.  Into this they throw crazy theories, unsubstantiated rumors and accusations, demands about recounts, an unparalleled devotion to guns and their enormous power while denying their role in killing countless people domestically.  They get to scream frothy words of division and sedition while demanding order from their Democratic colleagues and polite decorum and an audience for their most unhinged nonsense. 

That is the reality of Republican politics: they follow the FOXNEWS style of unverifiable statements and lies and then (FAST, FAST) onto the next topic in the next few days leaving their followers newly enraged with the next (NEWSFLASH) unverified claim or rumor.  “illegal immigrants coming over the border to have babies, or perform abortions, or create fake NFTs” and then before those can be corroborated it is “Illegal immigrants casting fake ballots using the names and ID of dead people, people who want to take away your arsenal of weapons, and BENGHAZI”, then “Meth-fueled Welfare Queens forcing 1st and 2nd graders to marry same-sex partners and then force them to get gender-change operations”, COVID19 is fake and the people dying from it are Drama Actors, the vaccine puts you in the pocket of George Soros and Bill Gates, and Steve Bannon interviews Kyle Rittenhouse and shows you how you can  kill minorities who are coming to rob you – legally” and this goes on forever.

3) Is the only purpose of smoking to flick your butt out of the car window to litter on the ground?  Do cigarette smokers consider it a privileges and a right to toss these butts on the ground to prove dominance over the earth?  Those butts don’t just disappear; someone has to clean them up at some point.

Perhaps it is a quick self-denial that they are smoking at all so ridding yourself of the evidence is essential to the process.

4) Don’t live your life in an “echo chamber” of one-sided news reporting or information.  I know that I am tilted towards the Democratic and liberal sides of issues but I do listen to the conservative Republican views just to get perspective.

I still think that they are full of shit but I do know what their talking points are and I still think that they are wrong and deluded.  The important point is, I do listen.

5) I had the chance to listen to a MAGA-hat-wearing American Trump supporter who sounds indistinguishable from the leader of an Iranian Islamic theocracy despised by Trump.  This is a reminder of two things: Anti-Semitism is often a conspiracy theory about Jewish domination rather than simply a prejudice, and thus is expressed by conspiracy theorists of all backgrounds, regardless of their particular religious or ideological orientation.

Also, social-media companies like Twitter either do not understand this, or do not care about it.

This is the kind of people that Martin Luther King Jr. was referring to in 1967 when he said, “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking anti-Semitism.” Anti-Semitism is not just people with swastika avatars going around calling people “kikes.” It is an ancient, byzantine conspiracy theory that blames Jews for all of the world’s many problems. Teaching your algorithms and underpaid content moderators to remove tweets with obvious slurs will not address most anti-Semitism. Without serious schooling in anti-Jewish prejudice and its many manifestations, these arbiters will not be able to identify anti-Jewish conspiracy theories—“the Jews control the government/economy/media,” “the Jews were behind the slave trade,” etc.—as anti-Semitic. They will not know that anti-Semites love to lazily swap “Jew” with “Zionist” or “Israeli” in their ramblings to maintain plausible deniability.


6)  I read all the time about people wanting ‘patience’ and ‘understanding’ about their unique issues: Trans, gay, disabled, autistic, short, tall, and so on.  We are all asked to be a unique level of ‘nice’ to them and to ‘be patient’ with them.

I get it and I do understand but let’s face it: we all want special consideration from others.  We want that all the time.

Maybe not for the reasons that these groups ask for it but for our own more mundane reasons: we are not comfortable with the language, we are not from that area, we did not know the parking laws, we are lost, our car is not working well, our kids have worn us out, we lost our temper (and we are sorry), we don’t have the right amount for the purchase, we wore the wrong clothes for the event, we forgot to pay a bill on time: all things that we ask others to be kind to us and show us a level of patience and consideration that is not typically shown to others.

Be kind is a selfish request; it really means be kind to me (and f*ck everyone else).
