Dr. Lane’s Thoughts XXXXXVII

1) I have written about many topics in these columns.  Some of my columns are reflections on life, sometimes about my own life specifically, many are about health topics but nothing is as serious as this one: Donald Trump is the new Adolph Hitler.

Most of my audience is too young to know history very well going back further than 50 years (even that knowledge is probably suspect).  Certainly few of you have parents who lived through the Second World War – that is more grandpa stuff and it probably involves his often-told stories of youth and war that everyone tuned out decades ago.  We just don’t pay attention to things that do not strongly impact on our modern life of today.

One thing I am also confident in writing is that if the history I am writing about involves the lives of people in other countries it is even less interesting to all of you.  The country I want to inform all of you about is GERMANY, 1930-1939: when Adolph Hitler came to power.  I had a much older mother (she had me at 42) so I learned from someone who was a young woman in the 1940s – she spoke extensively about what she could recall as an ordinary American during a tumultuous time.  My father was in the Army, The Timberwolves Engineering Corp, served at the Battle of the Bulge and is one of the people quoted in the official US history of the event.  Two young people just living their lives during one of the most significant events of the 20th century.

Most of you know the American retelling of that era and we all learned that Hitler killed 6M Jews (and many other people, including the disabled and gay people), that we went to war, and we won (actually, the Allies won and it was a combination of actual battle war and Hitler’s decision to do the impossible: invade Russia and that took many of his soldiers deep into a country that has the worst winters possible and winter is what wiped out a huge number of his troops).  In retaliation, Germany killed 23 million Russians in various ways to ‘revenge’ his troops which has some bearing on the present-day invasion of Ukraine.

What many of you do not know is that Adolph Hitler was not embraced by the people of Germany initially.  Like Donald Trump, Hitler was considered a right-of-center clown who had a lot to say and not a very large audience.  He did have the attention of many of the same groups that Trump has attracted: right-wing nuts, people who enjoyed oppressive authoritarianism, pseudo-populists,  xenophobic loudmouths, and the ever-popular “put our country first” Nationalists (NAZI was an amalgamation of the word “Nationalist” specifically, National Socialist German Workers’ Party).[I can only suppose that ‘Socialist’ had a different meaning then].

Can you see the parallels?  Hitler had no one’s attention and then he had everyone’s attention.  It may be harder for Trump to pull off what Hitler did for a number of reasons including that Hitler’s call for nationalism was in the face of a country that had to sign a humiliating treaty upon a defeat in WWI.  They needed to save face and Hitler spoke to them about a “new” Germany that would be strong and a ‘winner’ again.  Trump does call for a “better” America but that is just words to what every person running for President says but with different means.  I think that the hats helped Trump in getting his message out.

Trump uses all the same tropes: he speaks of a “Great America” that needs to be established again (it never went away – we have always been great) that speaks to a WHITE America that sees loss of legal racism as a loss of power, that sees equality of gender, sex, and immigration status as personal affronts to their established control, that sees the loss of manufacturing jobs (that require little to no prior education) as an attack on their way of life in their pursuit of ‘economic equality’ for themselves (only, everyone who is not them can just die off). They embrace their own ‘freedom of speech’ (while declaring any other voice irrelevant and unAmerican),

These same people do not look too closely to the reasons that these things are happening which largely are due to the very wealthy people influencing our national leaders to make things go their way to increase their incomes (e.g. the way things have always been in our country), many of which involves moving jobs and opportunities to other parts of the globe.  Nevertheless, having many people disgruntled to draw from is what Hitler and Trump have in common.  Angry people are easily manipulated to ‘do something’ which is one of the reasons for January 6, 2021 – those angry armed men (and some women) wanted to ‘do something’ and they did the ridiculously illegal (which they all must have known would result in arrests).

What these same people, many of them very comfortable with solving problems with guns and inflammatory rhetoric, see is a man who speaks to them about SOLVING THEIR PROBLEMS by ‘rising up’ against… something vague.

Really, it is vague.  Trump talks about vague problems and vague solutions.  He says whatever the audience wants to hear.  He both praised Putin (“genius” and “savvy”) and stated his support for Ukraine and Zelensky in the war.  He can always go back to the video tape and clearly say that he is on tape saying whatever you need him to have said.  For some reason none of his followers think very hard that Trump said the EXACT OPPOSITE on another channel on another date.

So why isn’t he called out for his ridiculous two-faced approach to the world?  He has his lapdogs FOX NEWS.  CNN is not the opposite of FOX because CNN does report in an even tone both sides of the news, even with a SLIGHT liberal bend.

FOX News is 100% one-sided and truly the ‘bitches of the Republican Party” – but only the CONSERVATIVE angry side of it.  Long forgotten is the Republican Party’s even-handed stance on fiscal issues, the intelligently-stated views on immigration or anything said on issues in a stable way.  That is long gone as far as FOX News is concerned.

FOX loves Trump and his wild-eyed, frothing-at-the-mouth, GOP and they, in turn, are too scared to confront him or his crazed FOX News megaphone.  The louder and crazier the better!

Folks, FOX News never said they were actually news.  They are a channel selling advertising to make a buck.  They say what sells; they pay narrow-minded uneducated people to say stupid things because that sells ads to a demographic they want to reach.  If they found more money in showing Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson playing with kittens and puppies you can be sure that that is what you would see and those two (along with every other asswipe they have on that station) would be replaced with gentle nice people who have only wholesome kind things to say.

CNN is news; FOX is entertainment.  There is no CNN segment on celebrity couplings or fluff news that is meant to entertain bored old people at home, that stuff is part of FOX along with its suspect “news” – they are just keeping their masses ‘entertained’ because that sells ads.

The Republican Party is the new, revised, version of what became the Nazi Party in Germany.  This is not a perfect fit in my essay but it is close enough to make my point:  Hitler led a group of angry people and others that he made angry later on and that is Trump’s goal as well: take the disenfranchised, the loners, the nationalists, the White Power losers and tell them that he ‘loves them’ and give them hope that their version of America can be reality.

Trump lavishly praised the leader of RUSSIA!  Putin wants to wipe the USA off the earth and has spent over 50 years using every tool he has to make that happen and our former ‘president’ has nothing but praise for him?  This is much more romantic than a ‘bromance’, this is a love letter!  Decent people do not embrace a tyrant and autocrat; praise of Putin flies in the face of everything we are as Americans.  Trump shows his contempt of the US and of his GOP by forcing them to kowtow to this outlandish UNAMERICAN behavior of his.  Trump is not a decent American!  If he wants to go to bed with Putin I will buy him a ticket to leave the USA myself.  He is not fit to be a US citizen, much less the leader of this country.

Trump will be around for years.  He is making it clear that he will be the GOP candidate in 2024.  Hitler was a loser who also came back to successfully lead his country  – to ruin!  The Republican Party has to build, grow, or exhibit a backbone and kick him to the curb!  They must start by shutting off the horrible people who praise Trump’s every utterance on FOX News.  It is a start but the right one to make.
